Before starting the import process, the importer, after identifying the product, must know the Harmonized Customs Code or customs item for the product. This helps them determine whether the item requires approval from a specific ministry, such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Health, or Security. They also need to know the customs value imposed on the product.
What is the Harmonized Customs Code for a Product?
It is a globally standardized system for classifying products, known as the (HS) Code. It consists of six numbers that are standardized for all countries. However, individual countries have the authority to add to the system to create 10-digit codes based on their individual taxes and needs. Some countries use 8 numbers, while others use 12 numbers. The purpose of this code is to classify the names of products that are traded and shipped worldwide. This is because the number of goods imported or exported between countries is very large, and their names vary from one country to another. It helps the importer locate the desired product, identify the item, calculate the customs duties for the product, and facilitate the customs clearance process. Customs facilitates the identification of product specifications. There is a special coordinator for 5,300 products distributed across 99 chapters grouped into 21 sections. This customs coordinator code must be included on all shipping documents. The customs coordinator is used to enable Customs to identify the type of product, apply appropriate customs duties, and determine the origin of the goods. Are there trade agreements?
